Significant increase noted at expenditure and jobs In the field of Research and Development (R&D) in Greece for 2023, according to recent data announced by the National Documentation and Electronic Content (ECB).

Specifically, total R&D spending reached 3.37 billion euros, while employment amounted to 73,263 full -time jobs. The index ‘R&D intensity“, Which expresses the rate of R&D spending on GDP, has been stable at 1.49% compared to 2022, along with 8.3% GDP growth.

In 2023, total R&D spending in Greece amounted to EUR 3,365 billion, increased by EUR 294.82 million (9.6%) compared to the previous year. Configuration of expenditure per sector of activities

The area of business It contributed 49.3% (€ 1.65 billion) to total R&D spending, maintaining the upward trend in recent years. The key economic sectors were “Information & Communication” (312.85 million euros), “wholesale and retail” (€ 217.73 million), “financial and insurance activities” (194.64 million euros) and “professional, scientific and technical activities” (193.45 million). Regarding business employment, a total of 22,628 IPAs (30.9% of the total) were recorded, of which 17,001 were research staff.

The second most important area was that of Higher Education (Universities, Research Institutes, University Hospitals), with costs of € 982.55 million (29.2% of the total). During the same period, basic survey absorbed EUR 524.85 million and applied EUR 371.87 million. The top scientific fields were “Medicine and Health Sciences” (259.30 million euros), “Social Sciences” (223.20 million euros) and “Engineering Sciences & Technology” (216.12 million euros). In terms of staff, the sector hosted 33,335 IPA (45.5% of the total), with 27,566 IPA in research positions.

In state sectorExpenditure in 2023 amounted to EUR 707.86 million (21% of the total), covering both basic (EUR 278.25 million) and applied survey (294.65 million euros). The main areas of activity were “Medicine and Health Sciences” (EUR 208.48 million), “Humanities & Arts” (EUR 141.20 million) and “Engineering Sciences & Technology” (EUR 137.67 million). State sector R&D staff amounted to 16,948 IPA, with 9,855 in research positions.

In Private non -profit institutionsExpenditure amounted to EUR 16.77 million and employment was 352 IPA (of which 256 research positions).

Funding and regional distribution of research and development

The state was a major funder of R&D spending with a total amount of € 1.3 billion, coming from the regular budget, NSRF & Recovery Fund programs and other state sources. Equally important was private participation by businesses with an additional € 1.3 billion, while € 408.68 million came from participation in European programs.

At the regions level, Attica is of interest, garnering 57.1% of spending (€ 1.9 billion) and 49.2% of R&D employment (36.036 IPA). High R&D rates are recorded in Epirus (1.81%), Attica (1.75%), Crete (1.67%), Western Greece (1.55%) and Central Macedonia (1.52%).
