A medieval ecclesiastical instrument discovered in 1906 in the biblical place of Jesus Christ, in Bethlehem, near the Church of Nativity, is heard again after centuries.

Silent for 800 years, the restored medieval instrument sounds again in Jerusalem, in the monastery of Saint Saviour, (Saint Savior), within the walls of the old town.

“It’s really the original sound: the same vibration that the Crusaders heard in the Church of Nativity,” David Katania, a Spanish researcher who worked for more than five years, told the French Bureau to bring back the ecclesiastical body.

According to Father Eujenio Aliata, a Franciscan archaeologist who participates in a mission for various sacred places, including the Church of Birth in Bethlehem, the huge ecclesiastical instrument was discovered “almost by accident” in 1906, during the construction of a hostel.

The instrument appears to have been buried with “great care”, according to Katania, so the researchers managed to rebuild it for the most part – there are only 18 pipes that are not yet functioning.

“The hope that the Crusaders who buried these pieces had, that one day would resonate again, was not in vain,” said Koos Van de Linde, one of the world’s leading specialists in the world.
