The researcher Eduardo Tadao Takahashi, considered one of the pioneers of the internet in Brazil and founder of the National Education and Research Network (RNP), died this Wednesday (6th), at the age of 71.
Death was due to heart complications. The wake will take place this Friday (8), between 9 am and 11 am, at Parque Nossa Senhora Conceição Cemetery, in Campinas (SP), where the scientist lived.
Takahashi graduated in Computer Science from Unicamp, in Social Communication from PUC (Pontifical Catholic University) of Campinas and in informatics from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, in Japan.
As the first director of the National Education and Research Network (RNP), between 1989 and 1996, Takahashi was instrumental in the process of implementing the Internet in Brazil.
“Tadao was the creator of the then CNPq research project that brought together government, academia and companies in the construction of the internet in Brazil. This enormous challenge was led by him with energy and great success, thanks to his great capacity for strategic planning, institutional articulation , creativity, perseverance and intelligence”, says a note from the board of RNP, an organization linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI).
Other institutions connected to the internet also paid tribute to the researcher, such as the CGI.br (Brazilian Internet Management Committee), of which he was an advisor between 1995 and 2003, and the Internet Society (Isoc).
“Takahashi started one of the first academic networks in Brazil, and was a driving force in the coordination effort with other national academic networks to establish a backbone that would become the foundation of the Brazilian internet,” said Isoc, in a note.
Tadao Takahashi was also the second Brazilian to be inducted into the Internet Society’s Internet Hall of Fame in 2017. The first was the CEO of NIC.br, Demi Getshcko, in 2014.
In 2020, the researcher was honored by CGI.br with the “Highlights in Internet Governance in Brazil” award, for his contributions to the development of the web in the country.
