Its scientists are confused NASA with the strange signals that Voyager 1 sends out of our Solar System. Engineers are trying to find the cause and decipher the data being sent.
Voyager 1 was launched in 1977 and has been in space for 45 years. Together with Voyager 2 they are outside the Solar System, in interstellar space, while the distance of Voyager 1 from the Earth is estimated at 24 billion kilometers.
Voyager 1 ground team received recent data from the spacecraft that have confused them. While the boat is in good condition despite its age and the signal is still strong, the packets contain confusing or invalid data.
A mystery like this can be explained by the age of the mission. Both boats is 45 years old, which is much more than the design of the mission. Also in interstellar space, an environment with high ambient radiation in which no vessel has been found in the past. So there are big challenges for the engineering team.
The huge distance that the Voyagers have means that any order sent by the engineers takes two days to be received by the boats. The problem may be solved with some software changes. If this does not happen, the ground team will have to adjust to the changes.
In any case, both vessels have energy that will allow them to operate for a few more years as scientists estimate that neither will have enough plutonium-238 to function normally.
