Easyjet withdraws 7 planes from Berlin – Losses of € 30 million for the airport of the German capital

by

At least 2.3 million fewer passengers and a loss of 30 million euros for the airport of the German capital are expected to cost the departure of a large part of the fleet of the airline Easyjet from Berlin.

The low-cost company Easyjet announced that it will withdraw seven of its 18 aircraft from the Berlin base from next winter, while 275 of the 800 crew members are expected to be fired. The company cites “high and ever-increasing” airport charges and the weaker-than-expected recovery in demand after the pandemic in that market. However, Lufthansa’s subsidiary, Eurowings, has already expressed interest in absorbing those who are finally fired and has announced that it will submit an “attractive” proposal.

The management company of Berlin International Airport BER estimates that it will serve 17 million passengers this year, almost half of the customers of the two old airports of the city before the pandemic. The financial forecast speaks of a turnover of 550 million euros.
