The Dutch company GasTerra announced today that from tomorrow Tuesday, May 31, it will stop receiving gas from the Russian Gazprom, after refusing to agree to Moscow’s demands and pay in rubles.
GasTerra, which buys and trades gas on behalf of the Dutch government, said it had already contracted with other providers to cover the 2 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas to be received by Gazprom by October.
The company is 50% owned by the Dutch state while Shell and Exxon each have 25%.
“We understand GasTerra’s decision not to comply with the unilateral payment terms set by Gazprom”said on Twitter the Dutch Minister of Energy Rob Yetten. “This decision will not have consequences for gas deliveries to Dutch households”he assured.
In a statement, GasTerra said it had decided not to adopt the payment system required by Russia, which required the opening of accounts to be paid in euros, which would then be converted into rubles. The company claims that these actions may violate the sanctions imposed by the European Union on Russia and that the method of payment presents many financial risks. He had repeatedly asked Gazprom to continue to fulfill its obligations under the contractual payment methods.
