No more Turkey, only ür Türkiye: What Turkey is asking of the UN

by

No more Turkey, only ür Türkiye. Turkey has formally asked the United Nations and other international organizations to change its name from Turkey to Türkiye, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu announced on Tuesday.

Ankara will send today official letter to all relevant international parties and is awaiting the official change of her name officially after this week, Tsavousoglu said in an interview with the state-run Turkish news agency Anadolu.

The UN is “ready” for change, and Ankara has promoted the change to Türkiye from the English name Turkey in most of its international correspondence, including foreign news coverage, the Turkish minister added.

The move to rename follows a decree issued by the president in December Recep Tayyip Erdogan to change the name to Türkiye in English, French and German, among other languages, and on the labels of export products.

The term Türkiye “represents and expresses the culture, culture and values of the Turkish nation in the best way possible,” according to Erdogan’s decree, according to Anadolu.

The German Agency notes that the exact reason behind this renaming attempt, as well as the time in which it takes place is not clear.

Turkish state broadcaster TRT cited it in December “Non-flattering” connotations of the word Turkey in English, saying it refers either to describe “a large bird native to North America” (see turkey) or “something that fails miserably”.

It is noted that for a long time the Anadolu agency and the Turkish authorities listed Türkiye instead of Turkey in English and other foreign languages.
