The man remained in the room for several hours after injuring a doctor and two nurses at a California hospital.
Los Angeles police said the man had entered the Encino Hospital medical center in the San Fernando Valley at 4 a.m. yesterday.
He reportedly sought anxiety treatment before injuring doctors and nurses.
According to police, the injured were taken to the trauma center in serious condition, one of whom required surgery.
All three have since been reported in stable condition at Dignity Health Northridge Hospital Medical Center.
According to police, the man stayed in the room about four hours after the attack, after a SWAT team member failed to negotiate with him and before he was eventually arrested.
Authorities said he was taken to another hospital to treat a wound to his hand.
Police said the ground floor and nearby offices of Encino Hospital were evacuated.
“We took the patient out of the danger zone,” LAPD Deputy Chief of Staff Alan Hamilton said at a news conference.
The man is known to have parked in the middle of the street before entering the ambulance room.
Authorities did not release the attacker’s name, but Hamilton said he had a long criminal history, including being arrested twice last year for police attacks and resisting.
There was no evidence that the man knew the victim.
Ultrasound engineer Benjamin Roman told KNBC-TV that he had met the man before the attack.
She said he might have been using drugs because the man was carrying a dog and was sweating, looking anxious.
After the hospital issued an “internal triage” code, Roman said he saw injured doctors and nurses.
“The doctor seemed to be in pain,” he said.
“There was a lot of blood and…it looked like he might be hungry.”
Yesterday’s attack occurred just two days after the shooters killed four people and were admitted to a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Authorities said the shooter entered the St. Francis Hospital campus building with minor injuries hours after purchasing an AR-style rifle.
The man killed a surgeon and three other people at the clinic.
He reportedly accused the doctor of pain after a recent surgery.
