The Russian Defense Minister had earlier claimed today that Ukrainian troops were withdrawing from Sheverodonetsk to Lysichansk, a large neighboring city, “having suffered critical losses during the battles for Sheverodonetsk (up to 90% in many units).”
Ukrainian forces are seeking to “regain full control” of Sheverodonetsk, a key city in eastern Ukraine where street fighting continues, city mayor Oleksandr Stryuk said tonight.
“There were some successes” of the Russian troops “who managed to enter the city and occupy a large part of it by dividing it in two. But our military managed to grow again, to create a line of defense. “At the moment we are doing what is necessary to regain full control of Ukraine over the city,” the mayor said in a televised interview broadcast by the regional administration’s official Telegram account.
