This Monday (6th) the Summit of the Americas began, an event organized by US President Joe Biden to try to regain US influence in Latin America. The event was in danger of being a failure, as the Americans’ decision not to invite Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua caused other countries to refuse the invitation – including Mexico, the region’s second largest economy.
American diplomacy doubled down on efforts to convince Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to attend. He only agreed after managing to negotiate a bilateral meeting with Biden — the first between the two leaders since the Democrat took office in 2021.
In this Tuesday’s episode (7), Café da Manhã talks with FGV international relations professor Oliver Stuenkel about the reduction of American influence on the continent and the expected results at the Summit of the Americas for the US, Brazil and Bolsonaro. .
