Actor Matthew McConaughey, a native of Waldale, wept at the White House as he spoke about the victims and children killed in a Texas school shooting.
McConaughey told a White House news conference Tuesday afternoon that he and his wife, Camilla, met the victim’s family at Robbie Elementary School after the May 24 massacre.
McConaughey was suddenly in tears when talking about 10-year-old Maitrodriguez seeking a career in marine biology. The actor pointed to her wife, who was sitting in the auditorium wearing a pale green conversion shoe with a heart on the toe.

McConaughey, who learned to shoot guns as a child, called for “responsible gun ownership” and gun control policies.
“We need a background check. To buy an AR-15 rifle, we need to raise the minimum age to 21. We need time to wait for these rifles. We are for people who abuse them. We need a Danger Signs and Results Act.” , said.
As Democratic and Republican senators are working on bipartisan legislation on the background and age at which Americans can purchase assault rifles, McConaughey said “something is different” from the current effort.
“There is probably a sense that there is an effective way forward,” he said. “The parties to this debate seem committed to sitting down and discussing new and improved paths.
