Russia said it is staging a major war game in the Baltic Sea amid rising tensions over Ukraine and the war with Sweden and Finland over NATO membership.
This move comes about because the Western Alliance is focused on defending Poland and the former Soviet Union from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia by conducting a series of military exercises known as Ramstein Legacy Exercises.
In the operation, 3,000 soldiers from 17 NATO countries will take part in the actual exercise in anticipation of a “worst case scenario” on the Russian border.
The Baltic Fleet said in a statement that Vladimir Putin responded to the communiqué by sending 60 surface ships and auxiliary ships, 40 planes and helicopters, and up to 2,000 units of weapons, military and special equipment.
The exercises included the deployment of small hovercraft by Russia, the firing of large cannons, and even terrifying military divers with rifles.
The rival war game has been sparked by a conflict in Ukraine that has killed tens of thousands of people on both sides since Putin invaded neighboring countries.
In the weeks before the Ukraine invasion, Russia conducted similar “exercises” in Belarus, forming an army of 150,000 along the Ukrainian border for “purely defensive” reasons, he said in a rice field.
The Baltic Sea in northern Europe is an important tactical front in the war.

Russia left the Baltic Seas Council last month, accusing the organization of being a “means of anti-Russia politics” and “deeply mired in Russophobic lies.”
The announcement came as German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz stated that Germany plans to strengthen its military ties with Sweden and Finland.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also expressed interest in supporting Sweden and Finland, signing a security agreement with them last month and announcing that Britain will “stand by” them if both countries are attacked.
In a statement in Iceland, Defense Minister Ben Wallace said many countries should be “very alert” to Putin’s intentions, and Russian leaders consider Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to be theirs, he added.
Wallace said: “He doesn’t feel compelled to cross people’s borders.
“I’m still not sure if he’s obviously stupid enough to do it with cruise missiles, but he’s going to have to deal with NATO.”
