“I talked to him this week. I invited him, as usual. He wants, two months before the election, to meet with me, here [nos EUA] or there [no Brasil]”, said Bolsonaro, in Orlando, Florida, where he traveled to inaugurate a vice consulate of Brazil.
Trump lives in the same state, Florida, but Bolsonaro said he chose not to meet with the former president this time so he wouldn’t have to extend the trip. He should travel back to Brazil this Saturday.
This week, the Brazilian president had his first meeting with US president Joe Biden, Trump’s rival in the 2020 US election, and said he was “amazed” by the meeting. Bolsonaro had said, before the meeting, that Trump was in the past and that he was now dealing with Biden.
“I didn’t come here to deal with this matter. [Trump]. It’s a past. You know I had an excellent relationship with President Trump. The president is now Joe Biden, he is the one I talk to, he is the president and this matter is no longer discussed,” he said on Thursday. 2020 and has already echoed the fanciful speech that his defeat was due to fraud.
Bolsonaro traveled to the United States to attend the Summit of the Americas, which took place in Los Angeles, after Biden reinforced the invitation through emissaries. The two presidents had a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the event.
In addition to inaugurating the vice consulate in Orlando this Saturday, Bolsonaro will meet with supporters at an evangelical church and should also participate in a motorcycle ride in the city, where he promised to respect traffic legislation. “Here, there is no way to pierce signs. In Brazil, people make arrangements with security forces. We are in another location, we will respect the rules here in the country,” said the president.
Orlando will also host a meeting of conservative personalities in which the Bolsonarista blogger Allan dos Santos, sentenced to prison in Brazil and considered a fugitive, will be present. The president said that he had not arranged a meeting with him, but that he would not refuse the conversation.
“If he is present, I will speak to him. He is a Brazilian citizen. He expressed himself, whether it was good or bad, but his sentence could never be a threat of imprisonment,” he said. Asked if the gesture could be seen as an affront to the Federal Supreme Court, which ordered Santos’ arrest for threatening authorities and spreading lies, the president replied that “ministers need to understand that they are not gods. We are all authorities subordinate to the Constitution.”
