A new invasion would undermine ongoing efforts to eradicate Islamic State, members of Congress said in a joint statement.
Their concern about the possibility of realizing Turkey a new military invasion of Syria expressed the leaders of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee.
In their joint statement the members of Congress call on Ankara to abstain from such an action, as, as they emphasize, a new invasion undermine ongoing efforts to eradicate Islamic State and would further intensify the existing humanitarian crisis.
“We are extremely concerned about the continuing threats from Turkey to launch a new military invasion of northern Syria. Previous Turkish invasions have disrupted operations against Islamic State by US forces and their allies and exacerbated Syria’s dire humanitarian crisis. An additional Turkish invasion would have the same devastating effects, including the displacement of countless vulnerable Syrians. “We strongly urge the Turkish government and allied forces to refrain from any military action, so that the focus on northern Syria remains to ensure the continued defeat of the Islamic State and to prevent further humanitarian catastrophe.” their announcement.
