Today is June, the day that commemorates the abolition of slavery in Texas in 1865.

The annual holiday took on a new meaning in 2021 after US President Joe Biden announced that it would be celebrated as a federal holiday for the first time.

In signing the bill, Biden said it was “one of the greatest honors of his presidency.”

But what does that mean today and how is it celebrated?

What is the June date? Why is it celebrated?

The June date marks the end of American slavery which occurred on June 19, 1865.

That day, Union soldiers under Maj. Gen. Gordon Grander landed in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the war was over and the slaves had been freed.

Slavery was officially abolished two and a half years ago, but it was not widely enforced in Texas after President Lincoln’s liberation was declared in 1863 because the number of Union troops carrying out orders was minimal.

In fact, many slave owners migrated to Texas to continue their businesses after the Declaration of Lincoln.

Since Texas was the last state to abolish slavery, June 19 or “June” was the official day to celebrate liberation from slavery.
