Unilateral executive decrees were announced by the representative of the American president. He did not specify exactly what they will be about and when they will be issued.
The decision of the very conservative US Supreme Court to abolish the right to abortionannulling Rowe vs. Wade’s 1973 emblematic decision to voluntarily terminate a pregnancy and returning to each state the possibility of allowing or not abortions.
Large mobilizations are taking place in major US cities, in New York, Atlanta, Detroit and Los Angeles, for the right to self-determination, with protesters stressing that they will continue to support women’s right to choose.
“Terrible blow to women’s human rights and gender equality” The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights called the Supreme Court ruling.
Leaders of US allies such as Canada, Britain and France have expressed regret over a setback in this decision that puts the US against the currents of the vast majority of countries, especially developed countries.
But what can Joe Biden do?
THE US President Joe Biden, seems to be considering receiving unilateral measures to refute it extreme decision of the Supreme Court.
The US president is looking for solutions after the decision, which includes unilateral executive decrees, said his spokeswoman in an Air Force One flight that transported the US president to Bavaria, where the G7 summit is being held today.
Speaking to reporters, the spokeswoman did not give any timetable for the issuance of these decrees and downplayed their importance. “Nothing can close the hole left by this decision … The only way is for Congress to take action,” he said.
However, Karin Jean-Pierre hastened to clarify that although the US President commented on the decision of the Supreme Court, the comment was about the decision itself, which is “extreme”. “Obviously, he does not question the legality of the court and respects the court …,” he said.
“In relation to the expansion of the composition of the court, it is something with which the president does not agree. “It’s not something he wants to do.” clarified the spokesperson.
A panel of experts set up by Joe Biden reached a stalemate last December over whether to submit a proposal to reform the structure of the Supreme Court, including expanding its composition.
Karin Jean-Pierre did not comment on other reform proposals of the commission, such as the imposition of a time limit on the term of office of members of the Supreme Court.
The spokeswoman also said that she expects that there will be appeals for the new state restrictive measures in the movement of women who will seek abortion outside the state in which they live.
