Tehran, Washington to begin indirect talks in Doha on Tuesday

by

“Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator, Ali Bagheri Kani, will travel to Doha tomorrow for talks on the nuclear program,” Kanani said.

Indirect talks between Tehran and Washington will begin tomorrow, Tuesday, in the Qatari capital, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani told the Iranian news agency IRNA.

“The chief negotiator “Ali Bagheri Kani will travel to Doha tomorrow for talks on the nuclear program,” Kanani said.

The United States and Iran announced today that they will resume their indirect talks this week, after months of deadlock in talks on Iran’s nuclear program.

The representative of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Said Hatibzadeh He said the talks “would not be about the nuclear issue, but about differences over the lifting of (US) sanctions” that plague the country, which is plagued by galloping inflation.

During a surprise visit to Tehran on Saturday, European Union Foreign Minister Josep Borrell made a similar statement, saying the talks would be different from those held by the EU in Vienna between Iran and the major powers.

Hatimzadeh expressed hope that there would be “positive results” in the negotiations.

“If Washington comes up with answers, then we can work fast. The ball is in Washington’s court.”

Qatar, which retains better relations with Tehran in relation to most of the Arab monarchies in the Gulf, wants to play the role of a diplomatic hub. Doha has already helped organize the negotiations between the US and the Taliban.
