Louisiana: Temporary brake on abortion ban – “Battle” in many states

by

Several states immediately rushed to outlaw abortions in their territory, relying mainly on laws that have remained dormant to this day.

A Louisiana judge has temporarily suspended the laws that prohibit women in this state from having abortions, following the recent reversal by the Supreme Court of a historic ruling that legalized the right to abortion in the United States.

The highly conservative US Supreme Court on Friday overturned the iconic ruling in the Rowe vs. Wade case of 1973, which guaranteed for almost 50 years the right of American women to voluntarily terminate their pregnancies, returning to each state the possibility of allowing or not abortions.

Several states immediately rushed to preach illegal abortions in their territory, relying mainly on laws that have remained dormant to this day. Others intend to reduce the length of time that abortion is allowed after conception.

The counterattack, however, was not long in coming, with appeals to state courts rather than federal courts.

In Louisianaclinic and medical students have appealed against three laws banning abortions, arguing that they are too “vague” as they do not clearly specify exceptions or penalties.

Judge Robin Giarosso suspended the laws yesterday until the hearing begins on July 8.

“Abortions can resume in Louisiana,” the Center for Reproductive Rights, which represented the plaintiffs, immediately wrote on Twitter.

“Every day that a clinic is open can make a difference in someone’s life,” Center President Nancy Northhap said in a statement.

This victory can only be short-termLouisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry has vowed to “do all he can to ensure that laws protecting unborn children come into force.”

Similar battles are being fought across the country.

In Jutea court also temporarily suspended the ban on abortions, following an appeal by the powerful Planned Parenthood family planning association.

This is “a victory, but it is only the first stage of an undoubtedly long and difficult battle,” said the union, which bases its claim on the argument that the abortion ban violates, according to it, the state Constitution.

The same argument is put forward in Florida by lawmakers who reduce the legal margin for a voluntary termination of pregnancy to 15 weeks, which is expected to take effect on Friday.

Procedures have also been moved to Ohiothe Kentuckythe Idahothe Texas or even the Mississippi.

This battle is expected to delay the process, but, as the Guttmacher Institute points out, half the states, especially the conservative and religious ones in the American South and Central part of the country, are expected to ban abortions on their territory for a longer or shorter period of time. .
