The European Commission announced today that it is proposing a ban on the sale of scented heated tobacco products in the EU, as part of the European Cancer Plan.

A recent Commission report showed a 10% increase in sales volumes of heated tobacco products in more than five Member States, while in the EU as a whole, heated tobacco products accounted for more than 2.5% of total tobacco sales.

Stella Kyriakidou, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, stated: “By removing scented heated tobacco from the market, we are taking another step towards realizing our vision under the European Cancer Plan to create a “Smoke-Free Generation” and reduce the tobacco-using population below 5% by 2040. With nine out of ten lung cancers caused by tobacco, we want to make smoking as unattractive as possible to protect the health of our citizens and save lives. The proposal will now be submitted to a review period by the Council and the European Parliament and will enter into force 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU. Member States will have eight months to transpose the Directive into their national law and after an additional three months of transition, the provisions will enter into force».
