Commenting on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s calls for Russia to be stripped of its UNSC permanent membership status, Poliansky said these statements “do not stand up to scrutiny”.
Excluding Russia from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is possible only if the entire organization is dissolved and re-established, Russia’s first deputy permanent representative to the UN has said Dmitry Polyansky.
Commenting on the appeals of the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to strip Russia of its permanent membership in the UN, Polianski said those statements “do not stand up to scrutiny”.
“Of course, all normal people realize that this scenario will only be possible if the UN is dissolved and created anew,” he said.
According to the Russian official, Kiev’s task was to “wake up” the member states of the UN Security Council, which are increasingly tired of the Ukrainian issue.
“Both Zelensky and the Ukrainian envoy to the UN are wasting their time, claiming from time to time that we [η Ρωσία] we have no right to this seat [Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας του ΟΗΕ], that we kept it illegally after the dissolution of the Soviet Union” he commented. “This is complete nonsense, we have explained it, and even UN officials have given due clarification.”
Earlier, Poliansky said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was allowed to address the UN Security Council on Tuesday remotely and without prior consultation with other council members, which violates existing practice.
During his speech, the Ukrainian leader urged the UN to label Russia as terrorist state, and exclude it from the UN Security Council, where the country has permanent member status and veto power.
