Britain: New Prime Minister on September 5

At September 5i.e. the day the British MPs will return from summer break, the new leader of the Conservative Party will be announced and new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

This sets the timetable for the internal party process Boris Johnson’s succession determined tonight by the Conservative 1922 Committee.

As announced by the president of the relevant party organ, Sir Graham Brady, the nominations they should be officially filed by tomorrow night, Tuesday July 12th. For a nomination to be accepted it must have the declared support of at least 20 members of the Conservative caucus.

This is an increased number from the eight that was valid until now, in order to limit the list of 11 interested parties so far.

The first vote, by the 360 ​​members of the Tory caucus, will take place next Wednesday afternoon, with the result announced the same evening. Any candidate who does not get 30 votes will be eliminated from the next round.

The second ballot will likely be held the following day, Thursday July 14, with the candidate receiving the fewest votes being eliminated.

There will be as many votes as needed next week, starting on Monday, until the final pair of candidates remain – before July 21 when the House of Commons begins its summer break.

Over the rest of the summer, the two finalists will take part in a series of campaign contests in regional Conservative Party bases, where the party’s grassroots can ask their questions.

Its approximately 200,000 members Conservative Party they will choose to vote by mail for their preferred candidate by the end of August, with the result announced on September 5.
