Russian authorities brought criminal charges against him, accusing him of spreading false information about the deployment of military forces, the lawyer says.
The popular one Russian politician of the opposition Ilia Yassin is faced with multi-year prison sentence for “defamation of the (Russian) military”as it became known from a post made today by his lawyer on Facebook.
Russian authorities brought criminal charges against him, accusing him of spreading false information about the deployment of military forces, the lawyer says.
“I just got a call from the investigator – an investigation is starting at his house”wrote lawyer Vadim Prokhorov in a post he made this afternoon on his Facebook page.
If convicted, Yasin faces up to 10 years in prison.
Yashin — a known opponent of the Kremlin strongman Vladimir Putin and ally of opposition leader Alexei Navalny (who is serving a 9-year prison sentence) — had strongly criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24.
He has already been fined several times for his postings, and is currently in 15-day detention for disobedience to authority.
It is recalled that the new strict law in Russia requires that the war in Ukraine be characterized as “special military operation” and not to release information about the Russian armed forces.
