Boris Johnson has tabled a no-confidence motion against his government in Britain, in a political maneuver aimed at confirming the expressed confidence of the House of Commons.

By wording the motion, which concerns the government only and not him, Mr Johnson is attempting to “nullify” the no-confidence motion against him and the government tabled by opposition Labor on Tuesday.

Taking advantage of the fact that Labour’s motion was about the lack of confidence in the government but only “as long as Boris Johnson is Prime Minister”, the government refused to give parliamentary time for debate and vote, saying that the Prime Minister is already under resignation.

The new motion of no confidence, which will probably be debated on Monday, allows even the MPs of the Conservative Party who would like Boris Johnson to leave Downing Street immediately but not to lead the country to an election, to support the government.

It is noted that the ruling party maintains wide autonomy in the House of Commons.

Meanwhile, Conservative MPs have begun counting after the first ballot in the race to succeed Boris Johnson. The result is expected at 5pm London time.
