More than 500 women are suing Uber for sexual harassment

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in San Francisco County Superior Court, alleges the company knew as early as 2014 that there were serious complaints about its drivers.

Uber has been sued by more than 500 women, who allege the company failed to put adequate safeguards in place and put them at risk during rides.

Court documents obtained by People allege that women in several states have been “abducted, sexually assaulted, sexually assaulted, raped, falsely imprisoned, stalked, harassed or otherwise assaulted by a driver of Uber with whom they had connected through the application.”

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in San Francisco County Superior Court, also claims the company knew as early as 2014 that there were serious complaints about its drivers. The filing states that the company failed to implement basic safety measures necessary to prevent these serious sexual assaults, which continue to occur to this day.

Additionally, the civil action lawsuit states the application “Safe Rides Fee”in which it began charging riders an extra dollar per ride “to ensure the safest possible platform for Uber riders and drivers.”

Her representative Uber stated that “sexual assault is a horrific crime and we take every report seriously». Last month, Uber released its second safety report, which showed it received more than 3,800 references for serious sexual assault charges in 2019 and 2020. The report’s data showed that the rate of reported sexual assaults had dropped by 38% since the 2017-2018 report, which had just under 6,000 reports of sexual assaults.
