With unbearable heat and temperatures much higher than usual, the weather in Western Europe will continue in the next period
The heat in West Europe looks set to peak on Tuesday, but temperatures may remain above normal for the season until the middle of next week, warned today World Meteorological Organization (WMO)pointing out that such phenomena may occur more often in the future.
“The question everyone is asking is, when will this all end?” said Robert Stefanski, the head of the WMO’s Applied Climate Services. “Unfortunately, looking at all the models from our partners nationally and regionally, it probably won’t be finished until the middle of next week,” he added.
Britain recorded a heat record today, with 40 degrees Celsiusas firefighters in south-west France battle to bring massive forest fires under control amid a heatwave ravaging the region.
Stefanski said the temperature will peak today but remain above normal for the season for the next few days.
At the same press conference, WMO Secretary-General Petri Taalas warned that in the future the world will experience “much more heatwaves” due to climate change. “In the future these kinds of heatwaves will be the norm and we will see even more extreme conditions,” said Taalawho wore a short-sleeved shirt and a cyan-red tie, to demonstrate the trend of rising temperatures.
Other WMO officials, in the same briefing, said they expected deaths among the elderly and those with underlying illnesses to rise due to the ongoing heatwave, and to increase pressure on health systems.
