A plan to limit natural gas consumption is proposed by the European Commission with the aim of dealing with possible reduced supplies from Gazprom.
Plan aimed at limiting natural gas consumption in its member states EU until 15% within the next few months, the European Commission proposes with the aim of dealing with possible reduced supplies from the Gazprom.
The interruption of the supply of EU countries in the last few days by Russia caused great concern in Brussels and in the European capitals in view of the coming of winter, prompting the Commission to present today’s proposal,
THE Commission proposes in the first phase the voluntary reduction of natural gas consumption, while pointing out that in the coming months and depending on the evolution of the situation, the proposal could become binding.
The Commission calls on all public bodies, consumers, households and electricity suppliers to take extraordinary measures to save natural gas.
The measures proposed by the Commission
Among the measures it is suggested that governments include providing financial incentives to businesses to reduce the use of natural gas and switch to other fuels, as well as carrying out information campaigns for consumers to limit as much as possible the temperatures in heating and cooling air conditioning.
According calculations of EU agencies in Brussels, if Russia cuts off gas supplies to the EU completely, the economy could shrink by as much as 1.5%.
It should be noted that it has been decided at the Community level to increase natural gas reserves in the Member States up to 80% of the capacity by the end of October, however to date this percentage is at 56% and achieving the goal seems particularly difficult. The Commission, for its part, signed a memorandum with Azerbaijan at the beginning of the week which could lead to a doubling of natural gas imports from that country, while an increase of around 50% is predicted for this year.
