“In the light of the vote expressed by the Senate last night, I request that the session be interrupted in order to go to the President of the Republic to communicate my decisions.”

Italy is plunged into a political crisis. In the Kyrinalio, the official residence of the president of the Italian Republic, is currently the Mario Draghi, who earlier announced to the Italian parliament that he would resubmit his resignation as prime minister.

“In the light of the vote expressed by the Senate last night, I request that the meeting be interrupted in order to go to the President of the Republic to communicate my decisions,” said the Italian Prime Minister.

Draghi’s resignation is expected to be accepted this time by Italian president Sergio Mattarella, paving the way for early elections next fall. The planned Council of Ministers will not take place, as expected.

Last Thursday, Draghi announced he was stepping down as prime minister leading a fragile coalition government. But the neighboring president did not accept his resignation and asked him to proceed with new negotiations with members of the Italian parliament in the hope of avoiding a political crisis and early elections.

On Wednesday, the Draghi government he eventually secured a vote of confidence from the Senate of Rome, remaining however under collapse.

The three main coalition parties, Five StarsForza Italia and Lega, refused to take part in the vote, effectively “torpedoing” his government.

The Italian Prime Minister received 95 votes in favor and 38 against in the Senate of 315 members, but this prevalence has virtually no impact. It is recalled that in the Italian senate, for an absolute majority, 158 votes are required.
