According to the July 22 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) scoreboard, 2,890 cases have been identified since the first case was reported in the US.
THE White House announced today that its outbreak monkey pox can be “eliminated” at USA thanks to a greater number of vaccines and virus detection tests available, as the WHO declared the highest level of alert for this disease.
“The plan is to eliminate the virus from the US. We can do it,” White House pandemic response coordinator Asish Jha told CBS News’ “Face The Nation.”
“We acted quickly,” he said in response to criticism that the health authorities reacted too slowly after the first cases in May, before the spread of the virus, mostly among men who have sex with men.
According to the July 22 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) scoreboard, 2,890 cases have been identified after the first case recorded in the US. Monkey pox is characterized by fever, rashes and patients generally recover but the disease can cause severe pain.
New York City (nearly 800 cases) has protested the lack of vaccines, and House Democrat Adam Schiff said the federal government is not up to the task of taking action to address the situation.
“When we started two months ago, we had a limited supply of vaccines,” replied Asish Jha, “but we have acquired more than any other country.” “We now have more than 300,000 vaccines. We will distribute hundreds of thousands in the coming days and weeks,” he added, referring to the nearly 800,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine blocked in Denmark pending inspection by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
On Saturday, Mr The World Health Organization has declared the highest level of alert to stop the outbreak of cases around the world.
Since early May, when the disease was detected beyond the African countries where it is endemic, more than 16,836 cases have been identified in 74 countries, according to the CDC.
