In Mariposa County, California, a state of emergency was declared after a massive fire destroyed at least 10 homes and evacuated more than 6,000 people.
More homes are up for grabs after a wildfire near Yosemite National Park.
Firefighters were called in Friday afternoon, but as of Saturday some 400 people were currently battling the flames, which covered 19 square miles.
Cal Fire described the “explosive behavior of the fire” as “provocative”.
Hot climates, low humidity, and dry vegetation can lead to difficult situations.
Scientists warn that climate change is causing wildfires that are increasingly devastating and unpredictable.
Daniel Patterson of the Sierra National Forest said:
This fire was blowing up to two miles before yesterday. These are special fire conditions.
The investigation into the cause of the oak fire has begun.
Due to the rapid spread of the fire, state transportation authorities ordered numerous road closures.
This includes the closure of Highway 140 between Kirstens Road and All Red Road, blocking one of the main routes to Yosemite National Park.
Oakfire occurred as firefighters advanced against the first flames burning to the edge of a forest of giant sequoia trees on the southern tip of Yosemite.
After burning about 7.5 square miles of forest on Friday, the Washburn Fire is 79% contained.
