Authoritarian politicians who manage to get reelected often use votes at the polls to consolidate the deterioration of democracy in their countries. A new study by Laut (Centro de Análise da Liberdade e do Autoritarismo) analyzes this phenomenon around the world and draws a parallel with the situation in Brazil, where Jair Bolsonaro (PL) is running for a second term.
In countries like Hungary, Poland and Turkey, politicians use government power to silence critics, control the judiciary and attack minorities. These leaders seek legitimacy in the popular vote to deepen attacks on democracy that began in their first term.
In this Thursday’s episode (28), Café da Manhã anticipates details of the study “The Path to Autocracy: Current Strategies for Democratic Erosion”, which will be released on August 5th. USP (University of São Paulo) professor Adriane Sanctis, one of the authors of the research, talks about the role of reelection in consolidating authoritarian advances and discusses the possible application of this script in Brazilian politics.
