Authorities have confirmed that a British man killed by a helicopter rotor in Greece was not trying to take a selfie.
Originally from Kent, Jack Fenton had just returned from Mykonos with a friend on Monday night and was killed instantly when the plane’s rear engine crashed near Athens.
Investigators initially suggested that a 22-year-old man was taken to a private room, returned to take pictures on the tarmac, and then “escaped” from his group.
However, this version of the event was disputed by the people with whom the Oxford Brooks students were traveling.
Investigators have now denied the possibility and said he might have been called instead, the Sun reported.
Ioannis Kondilis, head of the Athens accident investigation, said in an interview with local media:
“A 22-year-old man was reported to have put his cell phone to his ear, but it is not yet clear if he is speaking.”
After speaking with the arrested pilot and two ground crew members, Condilis said that Jack had removed the helicopter from the right door shortly after landing.
Then he went back to it and hid under the tail of the boat, as if it had been hit by an “invisible” – and deadly – rotor.
Witnesses also noted that they followed the helicopter’s instructions when disembarking from the aircraft.
Condylis added: [the group] 20 meters to the building.
“So one was with them and the other ground worker went back to the helicopter.
“The young passenger returned to the helicopter for unknown reasons. I don’t know why he came back.
“Nobody said anything. According to the testimony, she had a cell phone to her ear, so she did not know if she was talking to someone.
When one of the ground crew members saw Jack walking toward the helicopter, he yelled in English, “Stop, stop, stop,” but didn’t appear to hear him, Condilis said.
“The ground crew’s voice was heard by the captain who was riding in the helicopter and was wearing headphones, so he yelled.”
Surveillance footage from cameras outside the courtroom will be reviewed shortly to support the witness statement.
In a heartfelt tribute to Jack, his mother, Victoria, said the family was “devastated” by the death of their “wonderful” son.
Earlier this week, the Foreign Office confirmed that he was tragically supporting his relatives.
