His support to Liz Truss in the race to claim the leadership of the Conservative Party and the Prime Minister in the United Kingdom, the Defense Secretary offered Ben Wallace.
His support is seen as significant as Mr Wallace has been seen as the favorite to succeed Boris Johnson due to his appeal to Conservative Party members. However, in the end he decided not to run for power and until now he kept his cards closed as to which candidate he would support.
Mr. Wallace described the current Secretary of State as a “genuine, honest and experienced” politician who has the “integrity” required for the highest political office in the land. In his statements, he added that Mrs. Trass has been “very consistent” in supporting the defense and security sector, which concerns him as the responsible minister.
Wallace left sharp points against the other contender for power, Rishi Sunak, who was the second member of the Johnson government to resign, from the post of Minister of Finance.
“Ministers leaving at a time of crisis is not right,” commented Mr Wallace, who also admitted he wanted Boris Johnson to remain prime minister and the Tory leadership.
Mrs. Trass and Mr. Sunak took part on Thursday night in the first of 12 planned campaign events in regional Conservative Party seats, facing questions from an audience of Tory members who will choose the next leader of the party and the country.
The discussion in Leeds covered a wide range of topics, with the main axis being the upgrading of the north of England.
Party members will be able to start voting by mail or online from next week until September 2. The winner and next Prime Minister will be announced on September 5.
Bookmakers’ predictions make Tras the clear favourite, mainly because of the significant lead it has in the polls among party members.
