Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has described as “disgusting” the behavior of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who said Russia wants a “negotiated solution” to the war.

Gerhard Schröder, who maintains friendly ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, said he met the Kremlin strongman last week. According to Schroeder, there is a possibility of a gradual ceasefire in Ukraine.

“It is simply disgusting when former leaders of major states with European values work for Russia, which is at war with those values,” Zelensky said in a video message late Wednesday night.

The adviser to the Ukrainian president, Mykhailo Podoliak, had earlier called Schroeder “the voice of the Russian royal court” and added that any peace deal with Moscow would depend on a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory.
