“Panic Mode” with water in England which is “thirsty” because of the drought. Millions of households are facing unprecedented conditions as the British government announced on Friday that parts of southern, central and eastern England have officially been placed in drought status following a prolonged period of hot and dry weather.
Supermarkets are rushing to curb pre-emptive stockpiling of bottled water with purchase limits, as with empty shelves in large chains such as Tesco they make their appearance, reports the Daily Mail. A branch of the Aldi chain in London put up posters limiting customers to three to five bottles of drinking water per customer amid panic.
“All water companies have assured us that essential supplies are still secure,” said Water Minister Steves Dumble, however, adding: “We are better prepared than ever for periods of drought, but we will continue to monitor the situation closely, including the impact on farmers. and the environment, and we will take further action as necessary.”

Water companies are expected to try to maintain their reserves after a series of major leaks in recent weeks that have wasted millions of liters of water.
The drought has also affected agriculture, including reduced productivity in grains, fruits and vegetables.
The headwaters of the River Thames have dried up more than ever before as England looks set to enter a drought for which some experts say the country is unprepared.
The British Met Office said this July was England’s driest since 1935 with average rainfall reaching 23.1mm, just 35% of the average for the month. For some parts of the country it was the driest July on record. The British government has announced that parts of southern, central and eastern England have been officially placed in a state of drought following a prolonged period of hot and dry weather.
