A popular Illinois pizza chain is recalling its frozen pizzas after customers reported finding metal in the slices.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced on Sunday the recall of frozen pies at the Woodridge-based pizzeria Home Run Inn.
The recalled product is “Chicago’s Premium Pizzeria Deluxe Sausage Classic Pizza” brand which is sold in 33.5 oz. boxes. They were created on June 6 and have an “expiration date” of June 12, 2022. Also, ‘EST.18498-A’.
The USDA asks buyers to throw away or return pizzas with identification numbers.
An estimated 13,099 pounds of pizza were shipped to retailers and consumers, the company told the USDA.
So far, the contaminated pizza appears to have been delivered only to distributors in Illinois.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) will provide a complete list of retailers that sold contaminated pizza after the investigation is complete. Results will be posted on the USDA website.
The company told FSIS that it “received complaints from customers that metal was found in their pizzas.”
So far, there have been no confirmed reports of injuries or side effects from eating pizza, but the FSIS says that buying pizza and leaving it in the freezer for too long puts more people at risk.
has reached out to the pizza company for comment.
Home Run Inn was founded in Chicago in 1923. The company is proud to continue to use recipes developed by one of its founders, Mary Grittan.
Other major food recalls also made headlines this year. In Europe, Kinder chocolate candies were recalled after more than 100 children contracted salmonella.
In the United States, more than 160,000 pounds of Skippy brand peanut butter have been recalled due to contamination issues after stainless steel fragments were found in the cans.
