“Any accident with radioactivity at the nuclear plant in Zaporizhia would deal a blow to the countries of the European Union, Turkey, Georgia, and countries in more distant regions,” the Ukrainian president said.
If a “disaster” occurs at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, under Russian control since March, the whole of Europe will be threatened, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned again on Monday.
“Covering the station, the occupation forces are shelling towns and communities in the region,” Mr. Zelensky complained in his speech last night.
“Any accident with radioactivity at the nuclear plant in Zaporizhzhya would deal a blow to the countries of the European Union, Turkey, Georgia, and countries in more distant regions. Everything will depend on the direction and strength of the wind,” the Ukrainian head of state continued.
“If Russia’s actions lead to disaster, the consequences may fall on those who remain silent for the time being,” Mr Zelensky added.
He demanded that the international community adopt “new tough sanctions against Russia” and not “succumb to nuclear blackmail”. “All Russian forces must immediately withdraw from the station and the zones surrounding it unconditionally,” he added.
The nuclear plant in Zaporizhia, Europe’s largest, was seized in early March by the Russian military in the initial stage of the February 24 invasion of Ukraine.
Since late July, several artillery strikes have been reported at the plant, blamed on each other by the warring parties, raising concerns that a nuclear disaster could be triggered. The issue was discussed last week at the UN Security Council.
