THE Stars Coffeethe Russian coffee chain that replaced American Starbucks after it pulled out of Russia due to the war in Ukraine, today opened its first store in Moscow, with the slogan “The Bucks are gone, the Stars are here”.

“Why Stars? Because the new company will bring together the stars of gastronomy,” Russian rapper Timati and restaurateur Anton Pinsky, who bought the 130 Starbucks stores in Russia at the end of July, explained in a statement.

The Brown came to be added to the American company’s white and green logo, while the little Starbucks siren was replaced by a little girl wearing a kokoshnik, a traditional Russian hat.

The coffee syrups will now be locally produced, while the menu includes dishes and sweets from new chefs in order to offer a quality “better than ever”, the Stars Coffee company assures in its announcement.

Contrary to the “Russian McDonald’s” In a highly publicized opening in June, Stars Coffee didn’t make much of a splash for the opening of its first store in central Moscow, on Novy Arbat Street.

Yesterday Thursday there was a small event attended by some celebrities and some journalists. The public can visit the store from today.

All the company’s stores are expected to operate until the end of September. Besides, 80% of the 2,000 employees at Starbucks agreed to stay with the new chain.

Starbucks, which had temporarily suspended the operation of 130 stores of Russia after the February 24 invasion of Ukraine, announced at the end of May that it was permanently withdrawing from the country.

The chain opened its first store in Russia in 2007.

After the invasion of Ukraine and the imposition of sanctions on Russia by the West, large companies were under pressure to leave the country, either for moral reasons or because they found it difficult to operate.

After more than 30 years of presence in Russia and with almost 850 restaurants and 62,000 employees, the McDonald’s chain announced in mid-May its final departure from the country. The company sold its operations, but not the name, to a Russian businessman.

On June 12, the “Russian McDonald’s” opened their doors under the name “Vkousno i totchka” (Delicious. Perfect).
