An Italian tourist, who had contracted monkey pox and was the first case of the disease recorded in Cubapassed away on Sunday, the Cuban Ministry of Health announced yesterday, Monday.
“This patient’s condition rapidly deteriorated and since August 18 he was in a critical and unstable condition, while he died on the evening of the 21st”, according to a statement from the ministry.
The Italian, aged 50, had arrived in Cuba on August 15 and was admitted to hospital three days later, the ministry added.
“The report of the Institute of Forensic Medicine concludes that death was caused by septicemia, due to bronchopneumonia from an unspecified pathogenic microorganism, and by damage to multiple organs,” he clarifies.
The ministry ruled out, after analysis, the possibility that the patient presented other pathologies of infectious origin.
The Italian was staying in a rented house and had visited places in the western regions of the country. On Wednesday he felt “general symptoms” of being unwell and because they persisted he went to a doctor on Thursday. He was rushed to hospital after heart attackfrom which he subsequently recovered.
According to the ministry, the persons who had been in contact with this man, who have been placed in isolation, are currently asymptomatic.
