Thirty people were injured and a young child died when a storm hit northern Spain.
Yesterday, rocks the size of tennis balls fell on the outskirts of the Catalan town of La Bisbal de Lemporda, shattering people’s windshields.
The 20-month-old girl was transferred to the Josep Trueta hospital in Girona, where she died a few hours later. The woman remains in the same hospital today due to her injuries as a result of the devastating hail.
Most of the other 28 who required medical attention were said to have suffered head injuries or ice lacerations that required stitches, as well as broken bones.
Catalonia’s meteorological director said the region had the strongest hailstones in 20 years. The nationality of the deceased boy and where he was when he was beaten are still unknown.

In 1888, the worst hailstorm in history hit the Indian city of Moradabad, with orange-sized hail that killed nearly 250 people.

Tourists traveling to Spain were warned earlier this month that they could find themselves caught in a rare Mediterranean storm.
Experts say this year’s record heat waves and rising sea surface temperatures linked to global warming have increased the risk of a tropical cyclone known as Medic.
“Higher temperatures in the Mediterranean provide more energy sources for drugs, making them more destructive,” said oceanographer and meteorologist Yurima Serdran.
“With warmer-than-average sea temperatures this fall, it’s not surprising to think that if atmospheric conditions are right, there will be a cure in the Mediterranean this year.”
In September 2019, seven people died due to heavy rains, terrible electrical storms and floods in the provinces of Alicante and Murcia.
