Mônica Bergamo: Alesp expresses solidarity with Latin American countries after Bolsonaro’s speeches

by

The International Relations Commission of the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo (Alesp) will send the consuls of Chile, Argentina and Colombia and the Group of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (Grulac) a note in solidarity with neighboring countries after lessons made by President Jair Bolsonaro. (PL).

On Sunday (28), during the debate between the presidential candidates promoted by SheetUOL and TVs Band e Cultura, the president accused his counterpart in Chile, Gabriel Boric, of having “burned subways” in protests.

On the same occasion, the President of the Republic attacked other left-wing leaders in Latin America to defend his reelection to the detriment of his main opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

“Lula also supported the president of Chile, the same one who practiced acts of setting fire to subways there in Chile. Where is our Chile going?”, said Bolsonaro.

The letter prepared by the Alesp commission states that the Chief Executive showed, with the statements, deep antipathy and aggression towards countries that are considered fundamental for the construction of a strengthened Latin America. He also says that the president’s positions relegate the country to isolationism.

“Our rejection of Bolsonaro is accompanied by our solidarity with the rulers of the aforementioned countries. Our respect for the Latin American peoples is accompanied by the certainty that Brazil will return to being a democratic nation, which dialogues and respects the sovereignty of the countries and respects the decision of vote of their people”, says the document.

The letter is signed by the president of Alesp’s International Relations Commission, state deputy Paulo Fiorilo (PT).

“Soon Brazil will once again walk side by side with our Latin American brothers in the construction of a fairer world, always respecting the fundamental bases of international relations, such as the self-determination of peoples and world peace”, he concludes.

After Bolsonaro’s speech, Chile summoned the Brazilian ambassador to Santiago, Paulo Roberto Soares Pacheco. The chancellery also highlighted that Boric has already expressed differences with the Brazilian, but defended the importance of maintaining good relations between the countries.

“We consider these accusations very serious. We regret that in an electoral context, bilateral relations are taken advantage of and polarized through disinformation and fake news”, said Chancellor Antonia Urrejola on Monday (29).

On Wednesday (31), Boric said in an interview that “Latin America has to react together to prevent” what would be a possible coup d’état by Jair Bolsonaro.

“It was very moving to see the letter from São Paulo, which gathered 1 million signatures in favor of democracy, with a transversality of signatories. It was a powerful sign of Brazilian society”, said the Chilean president.
