Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi promised on Sunday that he would do everything possible to resolve the country’s financial problems and, above all, to lift the overwhelming sanctions he faces during a televised interview for the first 100 days of his term.
“People are fully aware of the conditions that prevailed when I took over the reins of government, including the new coronavirus epidemic, the financial and economic situation,” Rice said.
The economy of Iran, an oil-producing country, is mainly affected by the resumption of US sanctions in 2018, after the US unilaterally withdrew from the international agreement on Iran’s nuclear program. The health crisis due to the new coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated the financial crisis.
Mr Raisi acknowledged that the “budget deficit” could “create serious problems for the country”. “Inflation”, “accuracy” and “tax evasion” are among the main challenges for his government, he continued.
“The government is doing everything to achieve economic stability,” he insisted.
He emphasized that the government was working “hard to lift sanctions”, but did not elaborate on talks with the major powers over the issue of Iran’s nuclear program.
Negotiations resumed after their suspension in June on November 29th in Vienna, with the aim of rescuing the international agreement on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program – formally the Joint Integrated Action Plan (JAP) – signed in 2015.
