Iraq: Five killed in Islamic State attack in remote northern region

by

Islamic State (IS) jihadists have killed four Kurdish Peshmerga fighters and a civilian and wounded six others in an attack near the northern Iraqi village of Kara Salem, Iraqi security sources said Sunday.

The Peshmerga Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs said in a press release that the attack in the village caused casualties. However, he did not confirm the report.

A Peshmerga official stressed that IK jihadists use unit tactics, usually attacking Kurdish fighters overnight.

“They avoid holding land for long (…). “More reinforcements have been sent to the area to prevent further attacks,” the official said.

A source close to the Iraqi army assured that his units were mobilized in the area to help the Peshmerga.

Sources close to the Iraqi security forces said that the jihadists captured the village of Luhaiban in northern Iraq one day after launching an attack on it. This information has not yet been confirmed by the Iraqi authorities.

The two villages are located in a remote area – claimed by both the central government in Baghdad and the autonomous Kurdish government in Arbil – in which IK attacks are frequent. However, it has been rare for jihadists to occupy communities near major roads in recent years, in this case the road connecting Arbil to the city of Kirkuk.
