The number of overnight stays recorded in July in Portugal reached 8.6 million, an increase of 4.8% compared to July 2019, the last summer before the Covid-19 pandemic almost paralyzed global tourism.

Portuguese hotels received a record number of tourists in July, with more than 3 million visitors, of which 1.8 million were foreigners, an increase of 6.3% compared to July 2019, the government announced today.

“It is the best month ever recorded” in the number of tourists staying in accommodation and overnight stays, the economy ministry said in a statement reacting to data released by the National Institute of Statistics and the Bank of Portugal.

In the first seven months of the year, the number of tourists exceeded the 14.2 million mark. In 2019, the Portuguese hotel sector received a record number of 27 million visitors.

The number of overnight stays recorded in July amounted to 8.6 million, an increase of 4.8% compared to July 2019, the last summer before the Covid-19 pandemic almost paralyzed global tourism.

Foreign tourists represented over 87% of all overnight stays, with the British first, followed by the Spanish and the Americans.

Tourism revenue, which accounted for nearly 15% of GDP before the pandemic, rose 11% compared to July 2019, the government said.

“These figures show that the tourism sector is, once again, a key driver of our economy,” said Tourism Minister Rita Marques. Portugal is “again distinguishing itself as one of the most competitive destinations internationally,” he added.
