Video from the camera brought by one of the officers, who had an arrest warrant, shows an officer escorted by a dog opening the door to a room and then, almost immediately, firing at Lewis who was lying in a bed.
An investigation has been launched into the incident and Andrew Gintherthe mayor of Columbus, pledged “full transparency” about “the tragic death of Donovan Lewis.”
“The family will go to court,” stated the Rex Elliott lawyer for the young man’s family, without giving further details.
“In one shot after another the video reveals the truth: three white police officers accompanied by an aggressive dog (…) killed in cold blood a 20-year-old, unarmed young man who remained in his bed, following police orders”, he emphasized.
Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant, stated that the officer fired as Lewis appeared to raise one of his hands holding something. Only an electronic cigarette was found next to him, she added.
Rallies are planned in Columbus over the weekend to show “support for the family” and to “start a conversation about police brutality,” but also to “demand justice for Donovan Lewis,” said Ramon Obey III of the JUST organization that fights for social justice.
Yesterday Friday, students gathered on the campus of Ohio University shouting the slogan: “Say His Name: Donovan Lewis”, according to posts on Twitter.
