The new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Liz Truss, pledged to implement the promises she made during the pre-election campaign in her victory speech before the leaders of the Conservative Party.

As he typically said, “I campaigned as a Conservative and I will govern as a Conservative.”

He also promised a “bold plan” to cut taxes and boost the British economy.

Boris Johnson publicly congratulated his successor, expressing confidence that “he has the right plan to tackle the cost of living crisis, unite our party and continue the great work of uniting and upgrading our country”.

The main opposition Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer hit back at the Truss election by saying he will have to explain how he will fund the tax cuts and support for households he has announced.

Despite a wide victory over Rishi Sunak, Ms Truss’s 57.4% of the Conservative Party member’s vote is the lowest of any similar leadership election under the current system.

Boris Johnson beat Jeremy Hunt in 2019 with 66% of the vote.
