Podoliak warns of bombings in Crimea

“We ask the residents of the occupied territories, including the Crimean peninsula, to follow the recommendations of (Ukrainian) officials during the measures to recapture” areas, Mykhailo Podoliak said

A top adviser to Ukraine’s president today warned Crimeans to prepare bomb shelters and stock up on supplies, as Kyiv draws up plans for a major counter-offensive aimed at ousting Russian troops from the occupied Ukrainian territory.

The Ukrainian government has been telling residents of Russian-controlled southern regions for weeks to be ready to evacuate before the start of a major counteroffensive. However, today’s warning is notable because it is aimed at residents of Crimea — which Russia annexed in 2014 — and not areas seized during this year’s invasion.

The Black Sea peninsula of Crimea is considered to be out of range of Ukrainian weapons systems. But several recent explosions at Russian military installations in Crimea have cast doubt on that. Kyiv has not claimed responsibility for the specific incidents and denies any involvement of Ukrainian troops.

“We ask residents of the occupied territories, including the Crimean peninsula, to follow the recommendations of (Ukrainian) officials during measures to recapture” areas, said Mykhailo Podoliak, an adviser to Ukraine’s president.

“In particular, to prepare bomb shelters, stock up on sufficient amounts of water and charge powerbanks,” he wrote on Twitter, stressing that all territory would return to Ukrainian control.
