The death toll from the powerful earthquake that hit southwest China’s Sichuan province earlier today has risen to 46, according to the latest provisional toll released by China’s public broadcaster CCTV.
Authorities in the city of Ya’an, which is near the epicenter, said 17 people had died.
In the neighboring district of Gartse, the victims are 29.
Roads and homes near the epicenter were damaged by landslides and communications were cut in at least one area, state television reported.
No damage has been reported to dams and hydroelectric plants within 50 kilometers of the epicenter, although damage to the provincial power grid has affected power to about 40,000 consumers.
The epicenter of the tremor was in the city of Luding, according to the China Seismological Center, in the mountainous region about 226 km southwest of Chengdu, a city of about 21 million people.
