by

The poll by the IPEC institute — formerly IBOPE — has 76-year-old Lula garnering 44% of voter intentions, compared to 31% for 67-year-old Jair Bolsonaro, ahead of the first round. These percentages were respectively 44 and 32% in the institute’s previous survey.

The lead given to centre-left former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (2003-2010) over far-right head of state Jair Bolsonaro has widened to thirteen percentage points ahead of the first round of Brazil’s presidential election on October 2, a rolling poll showed the findings of which were made public yesterday Monday.

In a possible runoff on Oct. 30, if neither candidate gets the 50 percent plus one vote needed for an outright victory, Lula will be elected with 52 percent of the vote to Jair Bolsonaro’s 36 percent, according to the same research. This difference of 16 points is increased compared to the immediately previous survey (+3%).

The institute also found a slight deterioration in the situation for Mr Bolsonaro in terms of the percentage of Brazilians who approve of his work, which fell to 30% from 31% last time, despite promoting social programs and measures to tackle inflation. The percentage of citizens who disapprove of his performance in the presidency remained unchanged compared to the previous survey, at 43%.

The IPEC poll was conducted using personal interviews on a representative sample of 2,512 voters from September 2 to 4. The margin of statistical error is ±2%.
