War in Ukraine: Two counterattacks underway against Russian positions

Mr Arestovich did not reveal the locations where the counter-attacks are underway, explaining that information of this nature is the responsibility of the general staff to be released.

The Ukrainian military is currently conducting two counter-attacks against Russian positions in eastern and southern Ukraine, said Oleksiy Arestovich, a senior adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Mr Arestovich did not reveal the locations where the counter-attacks are underway, explaining that information of this nature is the responsibility of the general staff to be released.

The dual counteroffensive is intended to pin down Russian reserves and prevent the Russian military from strengthening one sector of the front while weakening another, he added, stressing that Ukrainian forces are putting their opponents under real pressure.

Although Mr Arestovich’s statements cannot be independently verified, Russian state television correspondents reported that the town of Balakliya, in Kharkiv Oblast (east), was attacked yesterday, with Ukrainian forces retaking territory, including the village of Verbivka .

The Ukrainian counteroffensive in the Kherson region in the south of the country has been underway since last week, but little information has been released by the Ukrainian military on their progress. However, the US and British military intelligence assure that Ukrainian forces have advanced.

Ukrainian President Zelensky met yesterday Tuesday with his staff to discuss the situation. He made no detailed comments on the counterattacks in his evening televised address, limiting himself to thanking Ukrainian fighters for their service to the nation.
