Charles III is proclaimed King of the United Kingdom

Charles III, 73, was formally proclaimed the new King of the United Kingdom on Saturday morning (10), in a ceremony that takes place at Saint James’ Palace in London. The proclamation was read shortly after 10:00 am local time (6:00 am Brasília time). For the first time, the event is broadcast on television.

In the first part of the ceremony, in which the king did not participate, the lord president of the group called the Accession Council announced the death of Queen Elizabeth II and proclaimed the new monarch. The council is made up of MPs, the Mayor of London, civil servants, High Commissioners from Commonwealth countries, Prime Minister Liz Truss and a range of religious leaders.

Also present were former UK ministers Boris Johnson, Theresa May, David Cameron and Tony Blair.

At another stage of the ceremony, King Charles III took his oath in which he pledged to “uphold constitutional government and seek peace, harmony and prosperity for the peoples of the Kingdoms and Territories of the British Commonwealth throughout the world”.

“I am aware of this heritage and of the sovereign duties and responsibilities that are passed on to me,” said Chales 3rd during his speech.

As in his first address to the nation as king, this Friday (9), the monarch sought to honor the legacy of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. “The reign [de Elizabeth 2ª] it was unparalleled in its duration, dedication and devotion. […] I know how deeply you and the entire nation are, and I think I can say that the entire world sympathizes with me for the irreparable loss we all suffer.”

Although formally proclaimed king this Saturday, Charles III still has no date set for his coronation — the event could take more than a year from now.

The oldest British monarch in history and the longest-serving crown prince, Charles is expected to make his reign a transitional period between that of his mother, revered for her dedication to public service, and that of her son William, 40, seen as the modernization of royalty.

While Elizabeth took the throne when the United Kingdom was still a power, Charles inherits a country that is experiencing an identity crisis and has become a secondary actor in global geopolitics. In addition to having opted for an isolationist turn with Brexit, the divorce with the European Union has its very existence at risk.

A new referendum on Scottish independence, mounting pressures for Northern Ireland’s integration into the Irish Republic and even a resurgence of nationalism in Wales are on the horizon — particularly painful for a man who has become so associated with the region.
